Authenticator app

Authenticator app: An authenticator app generates the six-digit login codes used for two-factor authentication on your phone, without needing a text message.

Updated February 1, 2027

An example

Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or the authenticator built into a password manager like 1Password or Bitwarden.

Why it matters to you

Codes from an app cannot be intercepted by a SIM swap, which is why they are safer than text codes.
