What to do this week
- Set up a payment plan or pay today at irs.gov; the online agreement stops the escalation.
- If you cannot pay, call the number on the notice and ask about hardship (Currently Not Collectible) options.
- Confirm every return is filed; the IRS will not approve a plan until they are.
The notice number is printed in the top right corner of the letter. Match it before doing anything else; scammers mail fake IRS letters, and a real one can be confirmed at irs.gov/account, where the same balance will appear.
When to get help
- The balance includes a year you did not file (a Substitute for Return).
- You have received any letter mentioning a levy or lien.
