Welcome to Latchkey Daily: the text your mom got this week

By The Latchkey Daily Team, EditorsPublished

A toll bill that isn't, the one setting that stops it, and why we named this thing Latchkey.

  1. Item 1

The unpaid toll text is back, and it's targeting your state

  2. Item 2

Filter Unknown Senders: the iPhone setting that defangs it

  3. Item 3

    Why Latchkey

Item 1: the toll text. “FasTrak: unpaid toll $6.99, pay by today to avoid a $50 fee.” It went to a few million phones this week, including a lot of yours. It is not FasTrak, or E-ZPass, or SunPass; toll agencies bill by mail to the car’s registered address. The link is a copy of their site that takes your card number. What it looks like and what to do if you paid.

Item 2: the setting. iPhone: Settings, Apps, Messages, Filter Unknown Senders. Android: Messages, menu, Spam protection. Texts from numbers not in your contacts go to a separate list with links disabled. Your mom’s phone needs this more than yours. The full ten-minute iPhone lockdown.

Item 3: why Latchkey. We were the latchkey kids: home alone, let ourselves in, figured it out. Now we hold the keys for everyone: our parents, our kids, our own accounts in a world built to trick us out of them. This is the brief for the generation that holds the keys. Five minutes, one action, every weekday. More about who we are and the rules we follow.

One action:Open Settings on your phone and turn on Filter Unknown Senders (iPhone) or Spam protection in Messages (Android). Two minutes.
